Each branch or bank office on the ISCD is identified by either a sorting code, BIC (bank identifier code) or both. All bank offices participating in the CHAPS Euro service must have a BIC , however not every bank office with a BIC necessarily participates in CHAPS Euro.
The checksum enables the initiator of any transaction to perform a sanity check of any specified bank account number on their own computer prior to actually initiating a request. Our database is searchable on sortcode or branch returning any available information.
Since the IBAN error detection uses mod 97, it will trap all such errors.
For example, sorting code 00-00-00 would represent the main bank office, and the first subbank office registered would have the suffix 01.
