It identifies both the bank and the branch where the account is held. One of the design aims of the IBAN was to enable as much validation as possible to be done at the point of data entry. The British sort code is only used for domestic money transfers.
The current standard is ISO 13616:2007, which indicates SWIFT as the formal registrar.
The sort code, which is a six-digit number, is usually formatted as three pairs of numbers, for example 12-34-56.
