The British and Irish sort codes are only used for domestic money transfers. The sort code, which is a six-digit number, is usually formatted as three pairs of numbers, for example, 12-34-56. Before IBAN, users, especially individuals and small businesses (SMEs), used to be confused by the differing national standards for bank account identification such as bank, branch, routing codes and account number.
