The underlying rules for IBANs is that the account-servicing financial institution should issue an IBAN, as there are a number of areas where different IBANs could be generated from the same account and branch numbers that would satisfy the generic IBAN validation rules. IBAN imposes a flexible but regular format sufficient for account identification and contains validation information to avoid errors of transcription. Fields format is: SORT CODE, BANK NAME, BIC, ADDRESS INFORMATION

A Bank Code is a code assigned by a central bank, a Bank Supervisory Body or a Bankers Association in a country to all its licensed member banks. The six digit sortcode is normally displayed as three, two digit numbers. The British sort code is only used for domestic money transfers.
It identifies both the bank and the branch where the account is held.
