This guide provides details of the format of the Industry Sortcode Directory(ISCD) data that is publically known as a bank sortcode. The British sort code is only used for domestic money transfers.
The Extended Industry Sorting Code Directory (EISCD)
The EISCD is a comprehensive database of payments-related information for financial institutions participating in the UK Payment Schemes: Bacs, CHAPS, Faster Payments and Cheque and Credit Clearing. Before IBAN, users, especially individuals and small businesses (SMEs), used to be confused by the differing national standards for bank account identification such as bank, branch, routing codes and account number.
