IBAN and BIC codes are widely used means of identifying bank account numbers, but not the only international system. The EISCD is updated weekly, and is available on a subscription basis from VocaLink. The Payments Council has also introduced a best practice recommending businesses and banks refresh their reference data weekly; whilst smaller businesses should ensure their data is updated at the very least on a monthly basis. A sort code is the name given by both the British and Irish banking industry to the bank codes which are used to route money transfers between banks within their respective countries via their respective clearance organisations.
