The British and Irish sort codes are only used for domestic money transfers. The numbering ranges for both are complementary, but do not overlap.
IBAN and BIC codes are widely used means of identifying bank account numbers, but not the only international system.
The pace of change is quicker now, driven in particular by the increased use of online banking, and the new Faster Payments Service.
